In this week's Write Channel tip of the week video we discuss one of the most popular phrases in creative writing teaching; show don't tell. This is probably the piece of advice that I give out most often to beginning writers, and the advice that I've heard others give most too. But what does it really mean? This video explains everything.
Telling is where a write simply states whatever it is she wants the reader to take from the situation or character behavior. This is fine in certain quantities but can feel flat and boring if done too much.
Showing is when a writer demonstrate what she wants to say by giving the reader a scene or action to work it all out from. Generally, it's a much more interesting and vivid way to write, as it keeps us with the characters and in the action.
There's also 'show and tell' when a writer shows us something then goes on to tell it as well
So, generally, try to show what you want to for the reader as much as possible. And avoid both showing and telling your reader too.
